For my photography degree thesis, I explored the enigmatic qualities of dreams. My thesis was an attempt to recreate a dream based upon a person’s written experience in order to make that dream viewable outside of the dreamer’s head.To obtain the descriptions, I designed a survey form, then sent it to thirty people, some of whom I knew and others of whom I did not. To make it even easier to return, I included return postage, and of the thirty surveys I sent out, I received eight in response. To add a challenge to the project, I opted not to work in a digital format, but rather to use film and darkroom printing techniques to produce the images. The final images were printed at 11x14 and installed in a small gallery space at the university. The development of the catalog was not actually part of the thesis, but rather an independent exercise. Each spread includes an excerpt from the dreamer’s original testimonial, and the image which is entitled by the dreamer’s first name. The book is a simple glue-bound 8x10 inch paperback. The cover is a smooth matte paper, printed by an error-diffusion inkjet printer, and the text pages are printed on a double glossy stock using a Xerox digital printer. |
